This Portland backyard had a downspout that led to nowhere, and no real place to put a seating area. We created a rain garden basin with a small island to catch the water. Ease of care was of paramount importance, so gravel took the place of weeds and stone. The greenery is largely confined to a long stone planter that effectively split the garden into two intimate rooms, and the family got their gathering space.
